The Open and Shut Gallery is a concept for temporarily appropriating public spaces to bring art to the community rather than the other way around.
As part of an initiative to temporarily transform abandoned spaces within the station passageway, Open and Shut Gallery occupied a series of unused stalls within the station corridor to create a pop-up art gallery that was open to the public for two weeks.
Taking visual cues from traders’ stalls in and around Brixton market, paintings where layered, stacked and hung within the enclaves to create a colourful and intense visual experience in an otherwise dull and barren route.
